ABOUT BUKOBA WOMEN EMPOWERMENT ASSOCIATION (BUWEA)

BUWEA was established in 2001 with a total of ten (10) members. The objective of forming BUWEA was to support women economically. Immediately after forming BUWEA women were trained on how to initiate small-scale production enterprises such as livestock keeping, agriculture, low capital business and others depending on the local environment. Women were encouraged to collect small an amount of money on monthly bases. This money was used to give soft loans to women used to run their production activities. BUWEA acquired an official registration in 2006 with the registration number 05/NGO/0080.   Currently, BUWEA has a total of 110 groups with a total of 1,050 active members in Kagera region. Most of its members are coming from Bukoba rural, Bukoba urban, Missenyi, Muleba,  and Karagwe.

ACTIVITIES IMPLEMENTED BY BUWEA

  1. AGRICULTURE

More than fifty acres of land Buwea owned by BUWEA at Kyabajwa in Missenyi district is used for cultivating various crops. The crops grown include cassava, soya beans, and vegetables.

  1. FOOD PROCESSING

BUWEA has a small food processing factory located in the Bunena area in Bukoba municipality. The factory does process various agro products such as quality cassava flour (HQCF), Soya beans flour and milk, and orange-fleshed sweet potatoes.

OTHER PROGRAMS IMPLEMENTED BY BUWEA

  1. LOAN AND SAVING (SACCOS): This enables BUWEA members to get soft loans for running production activities.
  2. DAY CARE: BUWEA established a daycare center with the objective of enabling women to have enough time to do other productive work apart from caring for children during working hours.
  • WATER HARVESTING TANKS: Established to enable women to be able to harvest rainwater for domestic use. This reduced time to fetch water from distant areas.
